Registration Information for Overseas Dentists
Dentists from countries outside the European Economic Area (“EEA”) should contact the GDC to establish approval of their diploma in dentistry. Once the GDC has approved your diploma in dentistry, the GDC shall notify you immediately that you have been approved for Registration. If the GDC does not recognise your diploma, you will be required to take the Statutory Examination known as the International Qualifying Examination (“IQE”). This examination is a test of claimed competence and is an appropriately exacting method of entry to the Dentists Register. Please note that before sitting the IQE you will be required to produce an original certificate showing that you have completed the International Language Testing System (IELTS) examination with a minimum score of 7.0 in each individual section. This is explained further in “The Process for Overseas Dentists Required to take the IELTS and IQE Examinations”

How the GDC decide whether an Overseas Dentist is entitled to Registration
In deciding whether or not a diploma shall be an overseas diploma recognised by the GDC, the GDC takes into consideration whether or not yours is a diploma that would normally entitle you to practice dentistry in your own country or the country in which your diploma was granted.

An overseas dentist who is not granted approval to be placed on the Register of Dentists but has been offered employment with a UK institution or practice may, in these circumstances, apply for registration on the GDC’s “Temporary Registration” register. Please refer to the section “Temporary Registration with the GDC” for the appropriate steps for such registration.

The Process for Overseas Dentists Required to take the IELTS and IQE Examinations
On 1 January 2001 new regulations for the Council's statutory examination, the International Qualifying Examination (“IQE”), came into force. The objective of the IQE is to test the knowledge and skill of dentists whose primary qualifications are not recognised for full registration with the Council. Entitlement for registration is gained by successfully completing the examination held at UK Dental Schools throughout the year. In order to take the IQE, applicants will be required to produce an original certificate showing a minimum score of 7.0 in each individual section of the academic International English Language Testing System (“IELTS”) examination before they can be entered for the IQE. Please see below for an explanation of what these exams entail.

International English Language Testing System (“IELTS”)
IELTS tests the complete range of English language skills that will commonly be encountered when studying, training or working in the medium of English. All candidates take the same Listening and Speaking Modules. There is an option of either Academic or General Training Reading and Writing Modules. Academic is suitable for candidates planning to undertake higher education study. General Training is suitable for candidates planning to undertake non-academic training or work experience, or for immigration purposes.

Most Australian, British, Canadian and New Zealand academic institutions accept IELTS and you will find that American academic institutions are increasingly accepting IELTS for admissions purposes. IELTS is also accepted by many professional organisations including the New Zealand Immigration Service, the Australian Department of Immigration, Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs, the Australian Medical Council, the UK General Medical Council and the UK Ministry of Defence.

IQE: The Process
IQE is in three parts:
1. Part A comprises written and oral examinations in the basic sciences and human diseases with an oral examination in clinical dentistry;
2. Part B consists of an operative test on a dental manikin; and
3. Part C contains written papers in all aspects of dentistry, an examination in clinical dentistry, an oral examination in general dentistry, a practical clinical examination and an examination in medical emergencies.
All three parts must be taken consecutively. The written examinations are in the form of short multiple-choice answers.

Those dentists who hold the MFDS (Member of the Faculty of Dental Surgery); or have passed the Primary/Part I Examination of the FDS (Fellowship in Dental Surgery) of one of the Royal Surgical Colleges of the UK; or have passed an examination recognised as equivalent by the Dental Faculties of one of these Colleges; or have Part A of the Intercollegiate LDS (Licence in Dental Surgery) will be exempt from Part A.

Part B must be passed before candidates may attempt Part C. Parts B and C must be passed within eighteen months of each other otherwise Part B must be retaken.

Please refer to the GDC website for full details of timetable and fees for examinations at www.gdc-uk.org
