What is the GDC and what do they do?
The GDC is the regulatory body for the dental profession whose role is to protect patients by:
Keeping an up-to-date register of properly qualified dentists, dental hygienists and dental therapists (this will also apply to all professionals working in dentistry in 2004)
Setting the standards of dental practice and conduct
Maintaining standards for dental education

What are the changes the GDC will make to the Register in 2004?
From 2004, the GDC will hold two registers: one for dentists and one for Professionals Complimentary to Dentistry (“PCD”). This will mean that registration with the GDC will become statutory for a PCD before they can work in the United Kingdom. Those that would be required to apply for Registration will include:
Dentists
Dental Hygienists
Dental Therapists
Dental Nurses
Dental Technicians
Clinical Dental Technicians
Maxillofacial Prosthetists and Technologists
Orthodontic Therapists

What qualifications do I need to register?
The usual route to registering with the GDC is with an approved qualification. Dentists from EEA countries have the right to practice in the UK with no visa or immigration limitations. Those in the dental profession that fall under these categories should contact the GDC at the following address:

What qualifications do I need to register with the General Dental Council (GDC)?
To register with the GDC as a -

Dental Nurse
You will need to have either the National Certificate in Dental Nursing or the NVQ/SVQ Level 3 in Oral Healthcare, Certificate of Proficiency in Dental Nursing awarded by a dental hospital that is recognised by the Association of Dental Hospitals.

Clinical Dental Technician
No qualification currently exists in the United Kingdom. Qualifications for Clinical Dental Technicians have yet to be considered and approved by the Council.

Dental Technician
You will need to hold the BTEC National Diploma in Dental Technology, SQA higher National Certificate in Dental Technology, Degree in Dental Technology awarded by Manchester Metropolitan University or the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff.

Orthodontic Therapist
No qualification currently exists in the United Kingdom. Qualifications for Orthodontic Therapists have yet to be considered and approved by the Council.

Maxillofacial Prosthetist and Technologist
You will need to be qualified with one of the following in order to register: HNC/D including four maxillofacial options IMPT Qualifying Examination, Diploma in Professional Studies (Maxillofacial) - Hospital based, BSc (Hons) Dental Technology including 2 year MPT modules or Diploma in Professional Studies, Manchester Metropolitan University.

Dental Hygienist
One from the following list of qualifications, Diploma in Dental Hygiene or combined Diploma in Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy (awarded by the School of Dental Hygiene/Hygiene and Therapy or the Royal College of Surgeons)

Dental Therapist
Qualifications currently approved for enrolment are the Diploma in Dental Therapy or combined Diploma in Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy (awarded by Schools of Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy).

What is the IELTS Test?
IELTS - International English Language Testing System
IELTS is a test of the complete range of English language skills that you will encounter as a student when studying or training in English. All candidates take the same Listening and Speaking Modules. There is an option of either Academic or General Training Reading and Writing Modules. “Academic” is suitable for candidates planning to undertake higher education study. “General Training” is suitable for candidates planning to undertake non-academic training or work experience, or for immigration purposes.

What is IQE?
The International Qualifying Examination (“IQE”) is an examination to test the knowledge and skill of dentists whose primary qualifications are not recognised for full registration with the GDC. The IQE comprises of three parts:
Part A comprises written and oral examinations in the basic sciences and human diseases with an oral examination in clinical dentistry;
Part B consists of an operative test on a dental manikin; and
Part C contains written papers in all aspects of dentistry, an examination in clinical dentistry, an oral examination in general dentistry, a practical clinical examination and an examination in medical emergencies.
Entitlement for registration is gained by successfully completing the examination and is held at UK Dental Schools throughout the year.
